Our Next Chapter – Body, Mind and Spirit

Having celebrated 20 years in business last year, it feels like a good time to reflect on FxMed’s beginnings that some of you may be unfamiliar with.

It all started in the year 1999, when my brother Dr Kamal Karl and I identified a need for New Zealand and Australian healthcare practitioners to have access to high quality supplements and functional testing services.

Leading practitioners in the USA and Europe were already using these tools so we set out to make them available in our part of the world. It’s hard to imagine how functional medicine, which was once seen as fringe medicine, would grow to what it is today. It has truly flourished supported by an ever-increasing body of scientific evidence that has helped thousands with their chronic health conditions who may have otherwise found little solace through mainstream medicine.

Although not a practitioner myself, I am driven to provide you with an ever-improving framework consisting of premium products, functional testing and education to help you support your patients.

With 20 years now behind us, it is a befitting time to think about adding another educational dimension to our company chapter.

As integrative health practitioners, you view your patients as a whole being, instead of a conglomerate of parts. Yoga, if understood at a deeper level, can help us connect the dots – for overall health and healing. The word yoga means ‘to unite’, and refers to the fusion of mind, body and spirit.

Besides the well-known benefits of yoga, ranging from alleviating hip and back pain, supporting pregnancy and labour, and improving overall stress management.

Growing research demonstrates benefits such as:

  • Improved cardiovascular health
  • Controlled diabetes
  • Promotion of healthy mood and even longevity

Yoga is everywhere

Many of us incorporate yoga into our lives by attending classes at our local gym or studio, practicing breathing techniques, meditation and mindfulness. But there is so much more to yoga. If we treat it solely as a practice, then we are not realising its true power.

For me, yoga is a way of life – a system in its entirety to realise, and live to our full potential. If we start to incorporate yogic teachings into our daily lives, then we can experience more than the physical benefits of asanas or the management of stress and anxiety.

Yoga offers us a pathway to manage the mind and help with our spiritual development. It helps us to develop the inner traits of equanimity and resilience, and rather than being so reactive, we can be in a place of calm, even when times are uncertain. The current pandemic has also highlighted our interconnectedness as a society, and the importance for us to be compassionate, kind and helpful towards one another – values that can often be overlooked in the daily busyness of our lives, but are some of the founding principles for a true yoga practitioner.

When yoga becomes a lifestyle, it can help to improve and control our perceptions, interactions, mind, feelings, actions and behaviour.

I personally began my yoga journey eight years ago, when I visited the Bihar School of Yoga (BSY), India. Founded in 1964, BSY is a premier institute for teaching yoga through its university programs, projects, medical research conducted in association with prestigious hospitals, and the immense amount of literature and resources generated through its Yoga Publications Trust.

Over this time, our family has been fortunate to make a connection with BSY and Swami Nirajananda Saraswati – disciple of Swami Satyananda Saraswati and Swami Sivananda Saraswati. We are delighted to share this wealth of wisdom that they have to offer, translated from ancient Indian scriptures (Vedas) with commentaries that make it relevant for the 21st century.

I have selected five titles that FxMed will initially offer from BSY that I think will deepen your understanding of the art and science of yoga.

All proceeds will be donated back to BSY to support their untiring efforts through their community outreach programs, to provide basic life amenities to thousands of villagers, including food, clothing, healthcare and education for children. This supports our company objectives of giving back to the needy in our society, and as Swamiji says, ‘Be good, Do good’.

We trust that you will find reading these books a rewarding experience and hope they will support you in your personal yoga journey.
