There is a link between thyroid antibodies and recurrent miscarriage. A positive thyroid peroxidase antibody in women with recurrent pregnancy loss may contribute to an increased risk for another miscarriage. With these factors in mind, it is essential that periconceptional assessment of thyroid function is conducted.
The link between thyroid function and male fertility has been debated but there is evidence that thyroid hormones influence Sertoli and Leydig cells and spermatogenesis. Carolyn will provide an in-depth discussion how we assess and understand optimal thyroid function to support fertility and pregnancy for both females and males.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the importance of thyroid hormones for men and women and how the mechanism of how thyroid dysfunction can impact fertility
- Understand how genetic variants may impact thyroid dysfunction and help us predict the individual risk of thyroid dysfunction and its response to treatment
- Review the exposure that may cause gene expression and trigger dysfunction
- Identify optimal ranges of thyroid hormone
- Establish the key nutrients to support optimal thyroid function
