You already know how enzymes help keep the digestive system healthy when taken at mealtime. But, when taken away from food on an empty stomach, some enzymes can work with the immune and respiratory systems to offer support.
Get to know these enzymes!
Proteolytic enzymes
Proteolytic enzymes (proteases) break down proteins. Nearly all immune threats are made of proteins that the body must identify, break down and remove. Enzymes that target and break down protein can support this immune process. Think of them as little street sweepers circulating in the bloodstream that clean up cellular debris. Their role is to help target foreign proteins and dead or damaged ones generated from immune responses.*1
Fibrinolytic enzymes
Certain proteolytic enzymes have more targeted roles. Fibrinolytic enzymes break-down excess fibrin in the blood. This substance formed by blood proteins creates long strands that form a net for platelets and other cells. By keeping fibrin in a normal, healthy range, these fibrinolytic enzymes support both circulation and cardiovascular health.
Mucolytic enzymes
Mucolytic enzymes are able to reduce both the thickness and viscosity of mucus produced as an immune response. By promoting the break down of excess mucus, these enzymes also promote healthy respiratory function and easy breathing.*3
